Mr. Johnson, an authority on early Native Americans in the Upper Ohio Valley, received a Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1984 from the University of Pittsburgh.

He has been involved in Late Prehistoric period southwestern Pennsylvania archaeology since 1965 and contemporary Late Woodland period archaeology in northwestern Pennsylvania since 1972. He has authored or co-authored a number of papers, published articles and chapters, and cultural resource management agency reports on the subjects. Most recently, he was the Senior Prehistoric Archaeologist and Principle Investigator for Michael Baker Jr., Inc., until his retirement in 2007.
